As long as I can remember I have always loved children. I knew that I wanted to be a mother more than anything in this world. Giving birth was never something that I feared. Being one of eight in my family my mother would tell me stories about how my paternal grandmother was a midwife and delivered my five older siblings at home. I took great pride in knowing that I was born at home and knew that one day I wanted the same for my children. Women giving birth is just a natural process that unless medical attention is needed women should just let their bodies do what comes naturally.
When I was eighteen my best friend became pregnant and I could not be more thrilled. I attended prenatal classes by myself so that I could learn everything I could to be able to support her through this amazing journey. When the call came that it was time I remember feeling that adrenaline rush and I knew then that not only was I so excited to be a mother one day but that I needed to work in maternity in some capacity. Although her delivery was not easy she did however welcome a beautiful little boy into this world. That experience taught me how much control was taken away from the parents and I knew that I wanted a different experience for myself.
Fast forward to 2001 I became pregnant with my first child. My husband was on board with my desire to have a midwife but was in shock when I announced that I wanted a home birth. My midwife gave me so much to think about and always asked what I wanted. The choices I made were my very own. I was given the freedom to pave the way to the most magical and beautiful delivery in the comforts of my own home. My husband and I went on to have two more home births and finished our family off with a cesarean section. Once again I was always calling the shots. The same midwife was present at all four deliveries and although they were all very different I still ended up with four beautiful healthy babies.
Our children are now grown up and I was so fortunate to have been able to be at home with them and watch them grow into amazing human beings that I am so proud to have them call me mom. We are a fun , loud and silly bunch who enjoy being outdoors. My French bulldog Sonny is never far away from me and has an incredible love and gentleness towards babies just like her mama.
